Job Role Summary
As the Head Engineering Substations (Civil & Structural), you will lead and oversee all engineering aspects for the civil and structural design and execution of substation and transmission projects across the Middle East and international markets. You will play a strategic and technical leadership role, managing a multi-disciplinary team to ensure quality, cost-efficiency, and timely project delivery. Your expertise will be key in integrating engineering with business objectives, driving digital transformation, fostering innovation, and maintaining industry-leading practices in civil and structural engineering for T&D and emerging technologies such as HVDC and solar.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Lead the end-to-end civil and structural engineering for substations (AIS, GIS, HVDC) and related infrastructure
- Develop and implement best practices in structural design for steel, RCC, and geotechnical elements of substations
- Plan, review, and approve design deliverables; ensure compliance with project timelines and cost targets
- Coordinate with project engineering managers, electrical & MEP teams, procurement, execution, and clients
- Manage a large engineering team including project leads, engineers, and drafters; ensure skill development and technical mentoring
- Collaborate with tendering teams for bid support, cost estimation, and pre-bid design solutions
- Support field execution teams by resolving technical queries and optimizing construction methodologies
- Review and optimize design productivity (man-hours), track engineering KPIs, and conduct regular review meetings
- Drive digital engineering initiatives and standardization in substation engineering processes
- Conduct risk assessments for design decisions and provide inputs for manufacturing clearances
- Engage with international clients and consultants to align designs with global standards and expectations
Competences, Skills, Experience
- 20+ years of experience in civil and structural engineering, with a strong focus on T&D, HVDC, and substation projects
- Proven track record in design leadership across substations, smart cities, telecom infrastructure, power plants, and large civil works
- Hands-on experience in the development of steel tower designs, smart foundation systems, and modular/pre-fab structures
- Expertise in managing cross-functional teams and driving large-scale rollout engineering initiatives
- Exposure to international project design standards and multi-regional execution environments
- Strong capability in structural analysis, BOQ generation, technical documentation, and design optimization
- Ability to manage stakeholder expectations and align engineering outcomes with business objectives
- Innovative mindset with an ability to challenge conventional design approaches
Education, Academic Qualification, Certifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering (B.E./B.Tech) – Mandatory
- Master’s Degree in Structural or Geotechnical Engineering – Preferred
- Certification in Project/Program Management (e.g., PRINCE2, PMP) – Desirable
- MBA or relevant business education is an added advantage
Language and Other Selection Criteria
- Proficiency in English (spoken and written) is essential; knowledge of Arabic or other international languages is an advantage
- Proficient in engineering software tools: STAAD Pro, ETABS, TEKLA, AutoCAD, Revit, Civil 3D, SmartPlant, MS Office
- Strong communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills
- Willingness and ability to travel across project sites and client locations in the region and abroad as required
